Blurb

Trevor and Gabe never knew life without the other. As only children, they grew up as close as brothers, but their love grew to something more. Something they couldn't talk about because their parents wouldn't understand.

Gabe is gay and unapologetic about his sexuality. He refuses to live his life in the shadows, but that doesn't mean he isn't harboring secrets.

Trevor is his parents’ miracle child and he doesn’t want to hurt them. Coming out, admitting he's in love with Gabe, could ruin everything.

Heading off to college was supposed to finally free them to be together, but nothing is as easy as it seems. Can they find a way to navigate this new world, living and loving openly?

Review

If there’s one inevitability in life, it’s change.  Regardless of what we do to try to stop it, regardless of how we prepare, change happens.  Sometimes for the better, like the birth of a child or a raise in your salary.  But sometimes it’s for the worst, the ending of a relationship you thought would never end.  How we deal with this change often dictates what happens to us later in life.

Trevor and Gabe are experiencing change on a seemingly epic scale:  Their first year of college.  Friends since birth, they have experienced everything together, deepening their friendship into a real romantic relationship.  Where Gabe is out and the “Doer” of the duo, Trevor is still closeted and the “thinker”, analyzing every situation and trying to gauge the potential outcome.  The problem is, no one can predict the future, or how people will react.

Usually, a romance is about two characters meeting and coming together as a couple.  It’s not that often that a book will revolve around an established couple and their struggles to stay together, especially a couple as young as Gabe and Trevor.  Their differences are both a source of conflict for each of them, and also the thing that binds them together.  They understand each other in a way that only two people that have known each other as long as they have truly can.  Now, with that said, there were times that I really wanted to reach through my Kindle and smack Trevor.  I understand that some of the decisions he made were done out of an over-abundance of fear, but sometimes he allowed that fear to over take the relationship he had with Gabe, further complicating an already complicated situation.  But it was for that very reason that he needed Gabe in his life.  They quite literally balanced each other out.

I like a story about expectations versus reality, and how the protagonists deal with it.  And I especially like a story where the protagonists don’t allow that reality to tear them apart, where they work together to face a common problem.  I think that shows the strength of the relationship, even if the characters don’t realize how strong they are at the time.
Author Bio

Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s life. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.

When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.

Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?

Now, Sloan is a tattooed mom with a mohawk and two kids. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself with a good book and forget she has somewhere to be.
