Synopsis

Cobalt Winslow lost two loves when his ex-boyfriend, Calvin Denvers, infected him with HIV, taking his health and his place as principal danseur in their New York ballet company when Cobalt became too weak. Now dealing with the aftermath as best he can, Cobalt teaches dance in Toronto with the support of his oldest friends, Conrad and Peridot. The one bright spot in his life is Malory Preston, his brother’s driver and a man who is always there when Cobalt needs him. Kind and attentive, Preston embodies everything Calvin lacks, but Cobalt can’t let go of his unhealthy, long-distance relationship with his ex.

Calvin brings a messy and violent end to their affair, but offers a chance for Cobalt to return to New York—as Calvin's understudy—just when he's on the verge of a real and lasting relationship with Preston. Now Cobalt faces a choice between two loves: dancing and Preston. Preston must show Cobalt that he has the power and support to make the life he wants and deserves, no matter what he decides.

Review

Like Heaven on Earth is the third book in Jaime Samms’ entertaining and addictive Dance, Love, Live series and as the final book, I have to say that I am very sorry to see this wonderful series come to an end. I’ve enjoyed every one and I think Jaime saved the best for last. Emotional, sensual, and tender, this book focused less on the dance itself and more on how ballet affects both those that live it and those that love men whose life IS the dance.

Cobalt and Preston have both been introduced before in the previous books and I was so excited to finally get their story. You could tell just from their brief interactions in books one and two that theirs was a complex and deep relationship. As more and more details were brought up and their history explored more in depth, I was fascinated by how much these two have meant to one another over the years. Preston has been Cobalt’s brother’s driver for years and years as well as being Azure’s best friend. Cobalt and Preston have known one another since they were young boys and it’s that history between them that figures so prominently between them. As such, Preston knows all about Cobalt’s HIV status and his volatile relationship with his on again off again boyfriend, Calvin. Jaime did an excellent job showing the complexities and difficulties with Cobalt’s status, both how it ravages his body as well as his mind. Watching Cobalt get stronger both mentally and physically under Preston’s careful and fierce care was so satisfying.

Seeing glimpses of Adam and Peridot and Azure and Matt and Christopher and the rest of the characters we’ve come to love since the beginning of the series was such a treat. Jaime Samms has created such an incredible world with these men. Her use of details—from Cobalt’s flamboyant outfits, to Adam’s dance moves, and even Cobalt’s damaged but so sweet dog—these books are so richly written it only shows why Jamie Samms is one of my favorite authors.

You definitely don’t want to miss out on this series as each one will leave you wanting more and leave you with a sense of joy and warmth. All of the books, but especially Like Heaven on Earth, will leave you with such a smile on your face and love for dance you might not have had before. I highly recommend this book and series.

  1. There is a little piece of my heart in each of these books, more so than normal, because a precious piece of me has made it her life to be a dancer. Its a hard and demanding path she has chosen. I love her all the more fiercely for that brave decision to travel it. She was the inspiration for these stories. I think that comes through.
